A complete cholesterol test called Lipid Profile is a blood test done to measure the amount of good & bad cholesterol & triglycerides in your body. It requires 12-14 hours of fasting period.
Total blood cholesterol is a collective term involving estimation of LDL, HDL, VLDL and Triglycerides. Test results give a preliminary assessment of the individuals risk for heart disease, which guides further specific testing to reach a definitive diagnosis.
LDL Cholesterol
LDL Cholesterol carries cholesterol from the liver to the cell membrane where it’s used, and if excess it remains in the blood and accumulates on the walls of blood vessels, leading to blockage of blood. Hence LDL cholesterol is commonly called as the Bad Cholesterol and its important uphold optimal levels
HDL Cholesterol
HDL Cholesterol is termed as good cholesterol because it plays a critical role in removing the bad cholesterol from the blood thereby protecting you from cardiovascular diseases. A higher number is desirable.
Triglycerides
Triglycerides are how your body stores fat and an elevated level is directly linked to heart disease.
Your doctor may order this test for you if he believes that you are under risk for elevated cholesterol. Your weight and BMI can give an indication for higher levels of cholesterol in blood. If you are obese or overweight, your doctor is most likely to get your lipids checked and monitored at regular intervals.
Cholesterol is a vital chemical present in the body and performs many functions such as coating the cells of the body-forming the cell membrane, producing certain components called bile acids which aid in digestion of fats. Additionally, it performs an imperative role in production of certain vital nutrients like vitamin D and sex hormones like estrogen, progesterone and testosterone (steroid hormones).

Optimal : Less than 100 mg/dL
Near Optimal : 100-130 mg/dL
Borderline High : 130-160 mg/dL
High : 160-190 mg/dL
Very High : More than 190 mg/dL
Triglycerides
Normal : Less than 150 mg/dL
Borderline : High 150-200 mg/dL
High : 200-500 mg/dL
Very High : More than 500 mg/dL
Interpretations
A Total Cholesterol level between 200 to 240 mg/dl is considered borderline high and reflect moderate risk for heart disease. Your doctor may order a Lipid Profile test to further assess your health and take decision on controlling cholesterol and lifestyle modifications (diet, physical exercise) to keep cholesterol under control.
A Total Cholesterol level above 240mg/dl is considered high risk and patients are put under treatment for controlling cholesterol, and should be regularly monitored for heart disease
