A triglycerides test measures the amount of triglycerides in your blood.
Total blood cholesterol is a collective term involving estimation of LDL, HDL, VLDL and Triglycerides. Test results give a preliminary assessment of the individuals risk for heart disease, which guides further specific testing to reach a definitive diagnosis.
Lipid profile should be tested by every healthy adult in every 4 to 6 years. However, your doctor may recommend the test for you if you hve certain risks of heart disease. They include:

- Diabetes
- High BP
Triglycerides are how your body stores fat and an elevated level is directly linked to heart disease.

Interpretations
High triglyceride levels are associated with increased natural tendency for heart disease. Increase in levels can be attributed to a number of causes -including a high-fat diet or one that is high in saturated fat, trans-fats and cholesterol, physical inactivity, being overweight, cigarette smoking, high alcohol consumption, diabetes, kidney disease, thyroid disorders.
It can also co-exist with conditions such as type 2 diabetes or kidney disease.
When triglycerides are very high (greater than 1000 mg/dl), there is a risk of developing pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas) in children and adults.
