WHAT IS HEART DISEASE?
Heart disease is a term covering any disorder of the heart. It also encompasses cardiovascular disorders which describes problems with the blood vessels, circulatory system as well as that of the heart. As we know, heart is one of the primary organ that helps the working of the body, any abnormality can lead to severe results, some being life-threatening.
Always keep a check on your heart
Each year, 1 out of 76 Africans suffer from a heart attack. If the health of your heart remains unchecked, it may lead to:
- Congenital heart disease
Some deformities of the heart exist internally since the time of birth. Some of them are,
- Septal defects: There is a hole between the two chambers of the heart.
- Obstruction defects: The flow of blood through various chambers of the heart is partially or totally blocked.
- Cyanotic heart disease: A defect in the heart causes a shortage of oxygen around the body.
- Arrhythmia
- Coronary artery disease
- Myocardial infarction
- Heart failure
Arrhythmia is when the heart beats at an irregular pace. And there are many ways how a heart could lose its rhythm.
- Tachycardia: When the heart beats too fast
- Bradycardia: When the heart beats too slowly
- Premature ventricular contractions: Irregular or abnormal beats
This is the most common heart ailment that exists today. The coronary arteries supply the heart muscle with nutrients and oxygen by circulating blood. But due to excessive cholesterol deposits in the arteries, the heart fails to receive adequate oxygen and nutrients, leading to attacks and spasms.
In other words, this is also known as a heart attack. In this disease, the blood flow is interrupted that leads to the damage of heart muscles. This is usually caused by a blood clot that develops in the arteries and can also occur if an artery suddenly narrows.
Heart failure occurs when the heart does not pump blood efficiently. The left or right side of the heart might be affected due to this and can cause high blood pressure. And over a period of time, this can leave the heart too stiff or weak to fill and pump properly.
